10 Side Hustle Ideas You Can Research on a Small Budget
You don't need a big budget to research a side hustle. Here's how to build a short list of ideas and test them with less than $100.

Step 1: Make a List You Can Actually Test
You do not need a spreadsheet of fifty ideas. You need three to five candidates that pass a simple filter: you have some skill or interest in the work, someone else is already paying for something similar, and the start-up costs are low enough that a mistake won't hurt.
Good first filters:
- Skill or interest: Could you do the work for 90 days without getting bored?
- Existing demand: Are other people charging money for a version of this? If yes, that is a good sign, not a sign the market is full.
- Cost to test: Can you run a real test for less than $100? Side hustles like tutoring, notary services, digital templates, local cleaning, and freelance services all qualify.
Step 2: Do the Research Before You Spend
For each idea, answer three questions in writing:
- Who exactly is the customer? Write one sentence describing a specific person, not a market.
- What do they currently use instead? Every purchase replaces something. Know what you are replacing.
- Where do they gather? Find the subreddit, Facebook group, market, or neighborhood where these people already talk.
Then spend one hour in those places reading. You are looking for repeated complaints and requests. The phrase 'I wish someone would...' is a business idea in plain sight.
Step 3: Design a $50 Test
Before building anything, sell the simplest possible version. Offer a service to five people. Post a basic landing page with a waitlist. Put a sample product in an online marketplace. The goal is not profit; the goal is evidence.
If nobody responds, treat that as useful data and move to the next idea on your list. If people do respond, you have a signal worth investing in.
Step 4: Decide With a Deadline
Give every test a two-week deadline. A small budget and a short deadline keep you from falling in love with an idea that the market is quietly rejecting.
A side hustle does not need to be perfect. It needs to be real, small, and improving.
