How to Validate a Business Idea Before Spending Money
A practical framework for testing demand before you spend money: conversations, behavior, and market evidence in 14 days.

Why Validation Comes First
Most failed businesses were never really businesses. They were products built for people who were never asked. Validation is the process of finding evidence that someone will pay you before you build the thing.
Evidence beats opinion. If the only person excited about your idea is you, you have a hypothesis, not a business.
The Three Evidence Types
1. Conversation evidence. Talk to ten people who match your target customer. Ask them about their problems, not your solution. If they describe the problem you want to solve with energy and specifics, that is a signal. If you have to explain why it matters, that is a warning.
2. Behavior evidence. What people do matters more than what they say. Can you get someone to join a waitlist, book a call, place a pre-order, or sign a letter of intent? Each of these costs the person something, even if it is only their email address.
3. Market evidence. Look at competitors and substitutes. Are people paying for alternatives, even imperfect ones? A market that already pays is a market you can enter with a better offer.
A Simple 14-Day Validation Plan
- Days 1-3: Write your one-sentence customer description and problem statement.
- Days 4-9: Have ten real conversations. Take notes word-for-word.
- Days 10-12: Build a one-page offer with a way to say yes (waitlist, booking link, or deposit).
- Days 13-14: Share the offer where your customers gather and count the responses.
What Results Mean
- Strong responses: several people actively ask to buy or join. Move to a small launch.
- Weak responses: polite interest but no action. Rewrite the offer around the exact words customers used, then test again.
- No responses: the problem may not matter enough. Change the customer or the problem, not the pitch.
Validation does not remove all risk. It just makes sure you are taking a risk on something with evidence behind it.
